Stress, Anxiety and Insomnia Among Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Written on February 3rd, 2010 by Severica Vintilano shouts

Tyler, a five-year old boy was nicknamed \”Twister Tyler\” after being diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) about four months ago. He is currently enrolled in a special education (SPED) school to accommodate his academic and social needs. During the initial pre-enrollment interview, Tyler\’s mother said that her son used to study in a regular school but had to be transferred after the teachers complained about the boy\’s disturbing behavior in the classroom.

First, you might want to review the five basic strategies from the first article of this series: be prepared, breathe, take time out when you need it, focus on the positive, and do what you can, one thing at a time. But sometimes, you need more help. Your body may be flooded with stress hormones, and they need to go somewhere. Some serious intervention may be in order. Physical intervention.

1. Get a hug.If there is someone nearby whom you have a hugging relationship with, by all means, get a hug. Make it a nice and long one, if appropriate. If there\’s no one around, maybe cuddle a pet. Hugging or cuddling a pet releases oxytocin, which will counteract your stress hormones. And it also calms your stress response overall.

Parents who suspect that their children might be positive for ADHD should strongly consider having them examined by a specialist. Diagnosis of ADHD can only be made by doctors who have thorough knowledge of this condition. These parameters are usually used by doctors to determine if a child is ADHD-positive:A child exhibits behaviors common among those with ADHD; A child exhibits isturbing or hyperactive behavior that is uncommon in other children of the same age; andA child exhibits disturbing or hyperactive behavior for more that six months.

3. Vigorous exercise.Go to the gym. A fairly intense workout gets rid of the stress hormones and you will feel a whole lot better afterwards. In fact, that stressed-out feeling may well have evaporated altogether. If you\’re stuck at work, you could also walk or run up and down the stairs a few times. No stairs? Walk around the block.

A lot of parents, mostly those who have children with ADHD, often wonder how their kids acquired the condition. Based on recent studies done by Dr. Joseph Beiderman, Dr. Dennis Cantwell and Dr. Florence Levy, heredity plays a major role in developing ADHD. Other studies also show that infant exposure to toxic substances such as nicotine and alcohol and injury to the brain, especially the frontal lobe, from trauma or tumors can also lead to kids having ADHD.

During stressful events, adherence of harmful bacteria to cells within the lining of the stomach are also increased. Because of these bacteria, the immune system will then be triggered further. However, according to a recent study conducted among rats, ingestion of probiotics can decrease the \”stickiness\” of bacteria within the stomach and prevent the immune activation.

5. Pray.If you believe in a higher power, you will find prayer very helpful as well. Just turn your problem or situation over to God, the Universe, the higher power, and pray for guidance and right outcome. Then give a prayer of thanks for getting that guidance, maybe even add, Gee.

In summary, this article talks about stress, mainly being a psychological occurrence, does not only impose a threat for possible psychological problems resulting from it. Moreover, stress also causes physical illnesses such as gastrointestinal problems through influencing the nervous system to activate certain reactions within the body. Certain reactions cause changes within the stomach which heighten its vulnerability to harmful bacteria. Probiotics, being bacteria that are not harmful and can be used against harmful bacteria, can then be used as treatment for gastrointestinal problems.

Using Yoga For Weight Loss

Written on December 28th, 2009 by Jane Leeno shouts

Is it possible to experience weight loss through yoga? Certainly. Yoga is more than just stretching, contrary to popular belief. You can get a very different experience of yoga as exercise if you attend a class in your local gym. You could burn as many calories from a yoga class as you can from any typical exercise that raises your heart rate.

Yoga is a resistance activity, even though it may not seem like it. It’s like lifting weights so it qualifies as resistance activity. It can be very effective when you support your body’s weight, which is what you do in yoga. As is typical in any resistance workout, your muscle strength will increase.

You can find variations on exercises you would use in any other type of training. Whether it’s lunges, push-ups, squats or other types of movements, yoga offers a full range of exercise. But yoga poses are more interesting because it’s so different from other traditional exercises. Yoga is considered by many to be an art form. You can appreciate the full beauty of your body when you observe its reflection in the mirror while doing yoga.

Yoga can be a helpful aid to weight loss in that it works subtly in the mind as well as physically. As a way to begin your day, you can find some peace of mind that will cut down on your need for ineffective coping techniques. That is, the “emotional eating” that some people do. Whenever one is eating for reasons other than hunger, there is an issue to address.

Cutting back on eating for reasons other than hunger will decrease overall caloric intake. This in itself means that weight reduction can happen. By doing yoga, you can take some time to take a mental break. If you can do this during your yoga routine, you can apply the skill to your everyday life too.

You will see weight loss results if you can make a commitment to a yoga routine about 3 to 5 days a week. Yoga can produce very attractive physical improvements. You may be surprised because it doesn’t seem like the type of activity that would really alter your body much. Just because you don’t dislike it doesn’t mean that the exercise isn’t good for you. There’s no need to suffer for beneficial results. You can be kind to your body and be happy with the outcomes you get.

Learn yoga for stress relief and feel better. You can also consider fapid weightloss diets to improve your stress management.

A Few Thoughts About An Anger Management Class

Written on December 12th, 2009 by Cindy Drakeno shouts

Your jaw is locked, you are gritting your teeth, the veins are standing out on your neck, your fists are clenched and it is all you can do to keep from knocking that guy’s teeth out of his head that just shoved you out of the way and called you a few choice names in the process. Ah, another fun day in the life of Joe Blow, the average Man on the Street, with the raging stress level and someone barely holding on to his temper almost every day of the week. We are all that guy in one way or another, and with the economy in the tank, the government out of control and being run by miscreants, and our lives upside down; it’s no wonder there is so much road rage and murders and angry word exchanges at work.

One of the best ways for many people to get their feelings out and get rid of the stress that is becoming more insidious by the day, is to join an anger management class. The classes are run by professionals who are trained in human behavior and all its nuances, and can offer genuine help for those seeking it.

Just the fact that you can join a group of folks who are similarly upset and have anger problems, is a big help for many, because you all come from the same vantage point in your feelings—whatever the initial reason is or was for your individual anger. Being able to get your feelings out of your system in a productive way is a positive move, and an anger management class provides the environment for that kind of positivity; not to mention the fact that you will see just how pervasive anger can be for others, and that in itself will help you move through your own recovery and growth.

There are many people who have a hard time in dealing with frustration and the resulting anger and hostility that they feel, and an anger management class is a much better choice than trying to resolve things in your own way, like escalating the encounter or problem into a full blown physical confrontation that could lead to very negative consequences or even death.

Another thought on this is that there are all kinds of courses and classes on the Internet that can be accessed just by browsing up anger management class online, and then scanning the listings until you find one that sounds like a fit for you and is something you can afford. There are many larger companies that work with these anger management groups online and offer their employees the opportunity to join a class as a work benefit; also, people who are ordered by the court system to join an anger management class can use these courses as well.

For many folks anger can be a very scary emotion, especially when it is uncontrolled. People that suffer from uncontrolled anger feel like they are at the mercy of a beast that has taken over their psyche and rational mind, and they cannot fight it—–the anger takes over and causes all kinds of destructive behavior happens as a result. An anger management class can help folks with this affliction as well as those whose lashing out is much less severe. There are all levels available, all staffed by a professional in human behavior.

Life is full of stress and people interactions that are negative and anger provoking, and if you do not have an effective way of dealing with this stress and pent up emotion and rage, very negative occurrences can ensue and possibly ruin your life in many unforeseen ways. A well run anger management class can help with unloading these problems and working on alleviating the stress and the desire to go out and settle the matters physically, therefore giving you a more constructive way of dealing with life in general.

What Are The Recent Stress Management Statistics?

Written on November 16th, 2009 by Tim Sandersno shouts

Times have evidently been rough. With the recession and unemployment issues, the country is certainly going through some tough times. This is why many therapists and psychiatrists have come up with stress management seminars, books and programs that are developed to help people from all walks of life cope with the circumstances and problems that they face. They explain to people how stress works against them and how they can resolve their problems better. They also guide people towards choosing a healthier and more relaxed lifestyle which can encourage productivity and success.

Recent stress management statistics say that people have been coming to these seminars and taking help of these self help books and programs to cope with their anxiety. The American Psychological Association (APA) has released recent statistics and information about stress management.

As a general rule, two thirds of the people are likely to take help for stress management, whereas fifty four percent are troubled about strain in their lives. Workplace related stress management statistics say that sixty two percent of the people feel that their work causes stress while fifty two percent (which is more than half) of all working people are more stressed out about work than they are about their home lives. Most of that population (about 54%) is also concerned about their health being affected by this constant stress.

Stress Management Statistics from the APA further reveal that a significant percentage of the working people consider job insecurity and heavy workloads as stress causing problems. The most stressed out people are Managers and Executives whereas the least stressed happen to be the ones who are self employed. Money happens to be the top most reason for stress and about 73% of the people feel that way.

According to the World Health Organization 121 million people all over the world currently suffer from depression. This is an awful number and also increases the number of people doing drug abuse and having anxiety disorders.

Women are more susceptible to anxiety disorders than men. Many of those people also develop other disorders including anorexia (and other eating disorders), substance abuse and agoraphobia.
