Written on November 13th, 2009 by Sophia Petersno shouts

What is involved in studying online nursing? What jobs are there for nurses? What are the education requirements, and how much can you expect to earn after completion? These are some of the questions that you may have on your mind if you’re thinking of a career in nursing.

As anybody who has been in hospital knows, nurses are the first point of contact as regards treatment and diagnostic tests, and as such, they are incredibly important in the health care profession. They are the human face of so much health care – providing direct patient care.

What is studied in a Nursing Program? Nursing education usually includes courses in anatomy, physiology, biological sciences, microbiology, chemistry, nutrition, psychology, sociology, nursing, pharmacology, statistics, environmental and occupational health, and the liberal arts. But you can’t learn everything about being a nurse online. Programs also include supervised clinical experience in hospitals and other healthcare facilities.

What Nursing jobs are there? Nursing professionals are always in demand all over the world. Nurses are found in several major settings, including: Hospitals – where they provide bedside nursing care and administer medical care plans; Clinics/Centers/Healthcare Offices – caring for outpatients in doctors’ offices, clinics, and emergency medical centers, where they assist with examinations, administer injections and medications, etc; Nursing Homes – caring for residents; Schools; Home Care/Hospice – providing nursing services to patients at home; Prevention/Education Programs; Public Health; And there are many other opportunities for nurses.

The U.S. Department of Labor reports that employment of registered nurses is expected to grow over 20% up to 2016. Rapid growth is expected to occur in particular in the number of nurses required for hospital outpatient facilities due to technological advances in patient care, the growing trend in discharging patients earlier and performing more procedures as outpatients. Hospital jobs for nurses will not grow as rapidly ” but will grow. The aging population of the country will also lead to the need for more nurses.

To be a Registered Nurse (RN) in the United States, you must pass the relevant National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) or in Canada you must pass the Canadian Registered Nurse Examination (CRNE). This exam tests that you have the knowledge and problem solving skills needed to provide adequate health care to patients and is needed in order to work in any health care facility. The NCLEX-RN is taken by both Associate Degree (ADN) and Bachelors Degree (BSN) prepared nurses and the pass rates are about the same for both ADN and BSN prepared nurses. Make sure that your chosen program prepares you for the NCLEX Nurse Registration exam.

Many existing licensed registered nurses (RNs) with an Associate degree or diploma take online nursing programs at Bachelor’s level. There are several advantages to getting your Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree if you have the time and money to do it. The BSN will give you a solid foundation in the theory behind nursing and in how nursing practice fits into the overall environment of health care. Many of the best nursing jobs – specialties like Nurse Practitioner, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA), Nurse Administrator, and so on – require a BSN degree or even a Masters degree as well. And you can usually earn a higher salary with a BSN.

Your salary will obviously depend on which role you pursue, your qualifications and experience. The median expected salary for a typical Staff Nurse is over $61,000 (Salary.com).

You Can Succeed In Learning Online, But You Need To Start By Following These guidelines

Written on November 4th, 2009 by Sophia Petersno shouts

World economies have changed dramatically over the last few years, and will continue to change at an increasing pace. And with these changes have come corresponding changes in our work and our lives. Lifelong education becomes particularly important in this constantly changing, highly competitive, environment.

But education on-campus at university or college is not possible for many people because jobs or other commitments make it impossible for them to attend on-campus classes. Online learning provides a flexible solution for such people. Unfortunately, many learners enter an online program without realizing the problems they need to face. Thus, all too often they are disappointed with their first experience of this new mode of learning. To avoid this, there are six things that the learner should watch out for.

Just because it is a flexible form of education, it doesn’t mean that you can keep putting it off. Procrastination, and then trying to fit it all in at the end, has caused so many failures. Dont leave it until the last minute to upload your assignment or you can guarantee that your Internet service will go down just at that moment. So manage your time so that you complete assignments well before the due dates.

To complete a degree online means often working alone when your friends are out enjoying themselves, and it means maintaining this level of commitment for a long period of time. To achieve this, you must have a high degree of motivation. We did some research on success factors for our mature-age online learners. The number one factor wasn’t previous exam results ” it was motivation. Even with very few previous academic qualifications, we found that students would succeed providing they were motivated. So, do make sure that you are highly motivated.

Unfortunately, many of us were taught to use rote learning at school. But other skills are needed to acquire meaningful knowledge. This means having well-developed critical reading and thinking skills. To be successful in learning online requires that you develop these skills. Many programs or colleges will provide a course to help you acquire such skills ” it would be well worthwhile taking it so that you do know how to learn.

If you are learning online, the materials replace the lectures that students get in a face-to-face course. But they usually does more than those lectures ” the courseware often includes questions, exercises and further reading so that your learning can be active rather than passive. And that is the key – ACTIVE LEARNING. Make sure that you complete all the exercises and actively read the text.

Lectures in high school classrooms and in undergraduate classes can all so easily encourage the passive learning already referred to. But real learning takes place when you are interacting with the materials and with others. So try to find a learning group, either in your area or online, and exchange ideas regularly. Also, make sure that you respond to all the e-Tutors requests for participation in the discussion forums. There may even be a mark allocated for such participation.

Never buy a qualification from a diploma mill – it can cost you! Before you enrol in a program, make sure is it accredited by a real accrediting body. Many diploma mills will claim to be accredited by a fake body, so check with licensing boards and professional associations under which they claim to offer programs.
