Stress can be Funny

Written on November 23rd, 2009 by Sara Mendezno shouts

Stress is funny. Not ha-ha funny, but odd funny. It can motivate you to improve your life. But, it can also ruin your health and your life.

How stress affects you Depends on your quantity of stress and what kinds of stress you have. It can also depend on what kinds of stress you’ve had in your past and how you learned to deal with it.

The biological signs of stress are meant to help you physically survive. In your world, this is rarely helpful, since most stress today is psychological.

Psychological stress will come from issues such as concern about money, relationships, and your health. Your body’s physical reaction to stress does not help these situations. Since these situations are common and long-lasting, your body can potentially be in a constant state of stress.

This is what causes stress related health problems as varied as headaches, insomnia, trouble thinking clearly, depression and digestion problems. Health problems from stress eventually just increases the stress you already have.

It becomes obvious that managing your stress is preferred to letting it go. But, there are thousands of people telling you how to do this. Making the right choice for you comes down to finding what fits your problems as well as your lifestyle.

Looking into what causes you stress as well as how you experience stress.

It helps to decide if your stress is from situations or behaviors – Is your stress in proportion to the current situations or does it feel blown out of proportion? It may not be easy to figure this part out on your own.

If your stress is situational, what are the situations and can they dealt with in a practical way? Do you have the time and energy to get some form of exercise and a proper diet? (I know from personal experience, if I have high stress, it is when my life is too busy to work-out or get to the grocery store for planned meals. That’s when I need to slow down.)

If it is behavioral, spending some time looking at the situation analytically may help. Look at your past and see if it is affecting your present, such as memories of past emotional trauma. (The stronger the emotion, the more vivid the memory. The more vivid the memory, the stronger the stress you will continue to feel from it.)

After becoming more aware of your stress, you will have a better idea of how to take care of it.

Stress from current situations is easier to manage, once you find what works for you. Stress from behaviors or past experience may need outside help to get through and may take a little longer to deal with. But, it IS possible, and IS worth doing.

Seek professional help. Medication is sometimes an answer, but many people that have used medication for stress, experience side effects that affect their enjoyment of life. They often say they don’t know which is worse, to be on the medication or to be stressed.

Look into your options and find what fits for you. Then, make use of them. When it comes to improving your life, the only poor choice is to not make a choice.

Obesity in Oregon

Written on November 23rd, 2009 by Sara Mendezno shouts

Over 176,500 young adults under 20 years old have one form of diabetes. One in every 400 to 600 children has type one diabetes, according to the National Diabetes Statistics Web site. Diabetes is just one of obesity related health problems among children and adults. Obesity also causes other health problems such as hypertension, heart attacks and high cholesterol. In 2004 obesity related deaths ranked number two, smoking came in first. By 2005 obesity related deaths was expected to pass smoking as the number one cause of death, according to Medscape.com.

Americans lead busy lives and the cost of living is not cheep. In a typical family home, both parents work a forty hour week and arrive home late. Most of those families would rather relax than think about making a well balanced meal for everyone. Usually they will grab what it closest or easiest such as a microwave dinner, take out or the phone to order a pizza.

Eating out was once thought to be expensive, now because of places like Jack in the Box and McDonalds, you can get a meal that is affordable and fast. You can go to McDonalds and feed a family of four for less than twenty dollars. It is fast, easy, and most of all cheap. To feed a family of four a balanced meal, for example chicken with rice and a vegetable, costs more in both time and money something we are all short on. Fred Meyer, a local grocery store chain in Oregon, which usually has pretty good deals, but look at what it costs to feed a family of four. I went to Fred Meyer hoping to spend less than $20.00 on a well balanced meal. Foster Farms offers three chicken breasts in a package for around $9.00, but you would have to buy two in order to feed a family of four. One package of Uncle Ben’s instant wild rice only has two to three servings per container for $2.50 which means again you would have to buy two packages. As for a vegetable, a bag of organic baby carrots cost about $2.00. When it was all said and done, a healthy home cooked dinner for a family of four costs about $25.00. This is not including the time spent making the dinner and doing dishes afterwards.

Lack of health choice at restaurants makes eating right difficult. According to Foodfacts.info, in 2005 fast food chain, Wendy’s, pulled their fruit salad option after only ten months on the menu, sighting low sales. Many fast food chains have started to offer healthier choices such as Subway which offers raisins and yogurt, and Wendy’s offers mandarin orange fruit cups in place of fries. Some sit down restaurants have followed suit such as Red Robin which will allow you to order either a petite hamburger patty or a Boca Burger substitute for any of their burgers. Unfortunately other places do not offer alternatives or the alternatives are not well advertised by the prospective restaurant. Red Robin might offer a Boca patty substitution but it is in fine print which is barley visible at the very bottom of their menu.

When eating out, often you do not have control over the serving sizes. For instance at McDonalds, e medium fry package now has nutritional facts listed on the side. It shows how many calories are in that amount of fries along with the sodium content. What they are not taking into account is the amount of salt added to the fries after cooking, and the person filling the container usually over fills. Therefore the nutritional facts and serving size information provided is inaccurate.

As adults we need to set a good example for our youths. Children see how much their parents eat and they think this is the right amount of food for them. If you are always taking your children to McDonalds because you simply don’t want to cook all you are doing is setting them up for to then be obese. Gastric bypass surgery is the second only to breast augmentation, as the most common surgery among young adults. The time is now for us to start setting a good example for all people and start making smarter choices of food, make the effort to cook healthy meals, and rethink what a serving size is.

Weight Loss-Do it the Easy Way

Written on November 16th, 2009 by Patrick Glancy, BCHno shouts

Obesity in America is out of control. According to the CDC, in 2006 only four states had a prevalence of obesity less than 20%. This trend is happening not only here in America, but abroad as well. People gain weight for many reasons. Often they do not know proper portions, enjoy snacking or have emotional attachments to food, or could suffer from a food addiction. Weight loss can be intimidating, especially if you have a significant amount of weight to lose. However, weight loss can be easily attained if you go about it the right way.

Many time people get hungry between meals, so they snack. Often people aren’t eating the right things at meal times, and become hungry quickly. You need to know what foods are good for you and why you are hungry in the first place. Some times people snack when they are not hungry, maybe because they are nervous, bored or stressed. These are known as emotional attachments to food. It is important to address these issues before you can be successful in weight loss.

No one knows what an ounce of chicken truly is, many put their trust in restaurants to give them proper portions, and sadly this does not happen often. The portions found at restaurants are grossly exaggerated, and now more than ever people are eating out which fuels the problem. This issue obviously causes gain weight. Even when preparing food in the home, it is hard to decide what a proper portion is, especially if the food is tasty.

Food addiction is an issue that is finally making its way into the forefront of weight gain. People who are food addicts are usually completely out of control and unable to know if they are truly hungry or simply having a craving. Often times, food addicts have become so because of a habit. Once you address this habit, you are able to regain control and focus this energy on something else such as weight loss and exercise. Unfortunately people who suffer from this have a hard time identifying this as the source of their weight gain.

There is good news when it comes to dealing with the battle of the bulge. Hypnosis has proven to be a highly effective tool. Hypnosis is not a short term fix, many have experienced long term success because hypnosis deals with the actual triggers and attachments to food that could hold you back with other short term plans. It is difficult to figure out why you over eat, make bad food choices or snack without help. Hypnosis can help with this. This treatment deals with all the behaviors you are unable to deal with through regular diet and exercise.

After your first session you will instantly feel rejuvenated and energized. Hypnosis helps you to crave other things such as exercise, healthy food and other activities. Your energy will return to allow you to find joy in new activities and hobbies. You will feel more happy and relaxed that you are doing something about your problem instead of doing nothing at all. You will no longer feel the need to eat unhealthy things and sit at home on the couch feeling helpless.

Think about how different you life could be in just a few short sessions. Think of all the things you could be doing instead of eating. You need to find a pan that fits with you and your lifestyle. Don’t allow yourself to be one more in the obesity epidemic, be a better healthier you. There is no time like to present to make a decision to change you life. There are plans out there than can help you, make your choice.

Getting Introduced to Bookbinding

Written on November 12th, 2009 by Craig Bevishno shouts

Bookbinding is a not only a common hobby, but also for some people a wonderfully fulfilling trade that is practiced by thousands. There are few exercises that can blend a feel of the scholarly with the skills of a good handyman in one good artistic pursuit. This is why even in an age of machines and mass production, bookbinding remains a popular pursuit.

There are many ways to get started with bookbinding. One of the best ways can be to go to garage sales or auctions where old damaged books are sold. Make sure none of them are valuable antiques. Then practice repairing the bindings.

Many people self teach themselves when it comes to bookbinding. With a good guide or how to book, the proper bookbinding supplies, and a little bit of practice almost anyone can teach themselves over time to become a good bookbinder. Like many hobbies, it’s all about practice.

Bookbinding has a long and proud history, one that starts all the way back in the 2nd century in Egypt. Coptic bookbinding was practiced by the Coptic Christians in the area, and involved making folds on individual parchments, then sewing through the folds in order to make a larger book. This type of bookbinding lasted nearly one thousand years.

Following Coptic bookbinding eventually was long stitch bookbinding, a method that is often still used by bookbinders today. Long stitch bookbinding isn’t an exact process as there are more than one method that fall under this general style. The most notable part of this style is that the stitching goes through a slotted cover, which minimizes (if not eliminates) the need for glue.

While it might not be what you think of when you normally think of bookbinding, spiral bookbinding might very well be the most used method in the world. This is the type of binding that takes place for spiral bound reports, school histories, or even local cookbooks. Also referred to sometimes as “plastic coil bookbinding.”

This article has demonstrated just a few of the types of bookbinding that people practice. Do a little research to find the method that is most appealing to you and you may find a new hobby where you can truly see the results of your labor as they began to fill an empty book shelf.

If you want to learn more about book binding, please have a look at this page covering a wide range of topics, including book binding instruction.

Healthy Food Choices on the Rise

Written on November 9th, 2009 by Patrick Glancy, BCHno shouts

The public has spoken, they want healthy choices and America has responded! Being healthy and offering healthy choices has become a new trend not only in local cities but all over America and they aren’t going anywhere. Almost every restaurant is offering healthy options and disclosing their top secret nutritional information. Public schools are replacing soda machines and recreating the cafeteria food. Positive attitudes toward exercise and multi-fold benefits are being implemented at gyms. Organic foods and local markets are giving big chains a run for their money in many towns across America as well. It’s time to change our country, for the better!

Fast food restaurants such as Wendy’s and Subway were some of the first to offer substitutions for children and adults. At Wendy’s a salad can replace fries for no extra charge. For a kid’s meal, parents can order their children a fruit cup and milk instead of fries and a soda. Subway also has raisins and apples in place of chips. Other chains such as Fatburger are now using soy ban oil instead of regular vegetable oil which will reduce calories and trans fat. They will also start using the leanest beef possible in all of their burgers and they are now offering a Boca patty (soy based meatless patty) substitute for all their burgers according to prleap.com.

In past years many chains such as McDonalds had the public guessing about nutritional content but after a large public out cry, fast food and sit down restaurants relented. Now the nutritional information can be found anywhere from their internet websites, pamphlets in the place, or on the actual container such as McDonald’s fries carton. There is no more guess work to be done, consumers know exactly what they are eating, no more mystery meat!

Americans did not stop there, they went a step further and asked for schools to battle the bulge right a long with them. During the 2006-2007 school year, every district in America had a goal to obtain. This goal was to implement a better nutrition and increase activity levels according to aappolicy.org, and nearly every school accomplished this. Soda machines, snack machine and pizza were removed from every district from preschool to high school. They have been replaced by water, fruit and a salad bar. Kids can no longer sell junk food for clubs during school hours and all the cafeterias are required to serve balanced meals.

People are also making an effort to get out and exercise at least three days per week. According to WebMD.com, some of the most popular exercises are yoga, core work and martial art based exercises such as Tai Chi which all help to relieve stress and get you into shape. In 2008 WebMd.com reports America will likely see an increased amount of training, education and certification for all exercise providers and trainers. This is due largely to the rising health kick.

Organic foods are also here to stay! In the last ten years, local farmers have more than doubled. Consumers want to know where their food is coming form and if it has been chemically treated. When buying food from local farmers, it gives the consumer control, they can find out where the food has come from and what it has been exposed to.

Many consumers are also adopting a new type of “diet” called flexitarianism according to CNN.com. Dietitians are defining these dieters as those who eat mainly fruits and vegetables but also eat protein but only three days per week such as chicken, lean beef and fish. It is a diet which is low in saturated fat and high in fiber. Those who follow this diet have lower risk of stroke, diabetes, and heart attack.

Over the years obesity and obesity related health complications have spurred America into action. While there are consumers out there who love their triple Whoppers with mystery meat and King sized fries, they are quickly becoming the minority. Healthy living is taking over and it is here to stay!
