Completing firefighter training really isn’t quite as difficult as getting into the training program in the first place. While it is an admirable position, firefighters are up against some significant competition in the field.
The more relevant education you receive before applying for a firefighter training program the greater your chances are for success. Those with at least a two year degree are more attractive than a high school graduate. If the education is in fire sciences, and a four year degree, your chances go up exponentially. Becoming educated in the health field, such as an EMT certification, can be particularly helpful when applying.
Remember that your training is going to reflect both physical and mental elements. While you aren’t actually required to have a higher education, having a degree in fire sciences or being a certified EMT can boost your chances of getting into the training program. Once you’ve become one of the lucky ones and you get one of the thirty or so slots available per several thousand applicants you have training to look forward to.
There are several examinations that you will have to get through, two of which are written. Your physicall prowess is up for evaluation. So is your mental state, criminal history, and any other basic indicators that you might not be the best recruit. Of course, once you pass the exams, as well as the examination of your life, your training will begin.
During your training you will have to budget your time carefully. Those who can compartmentalize their time and stick to the time budget tend to do the best throughout the training. The physical tests and training period can be rather difficult the first time around even for those who are in great physical condition.
12 to– weeks of training is split into 8 to 9 hour segments 5 to 6 days per week. This means that you will be training for 600 hours and you will need to focus on the training instead of other life issues, jobs, or distractions. Obviously, the more focused you are the better you are going to perform.
Fire fighter training is well worth it. The positions that are available offer many advantages, as well as risks. Those who make it through the program look forward to landing the job that they have admired since childhood. You can choose to succumb to the competition or you can choose to rise above it.
