Writing professional CVs for a living, I see an incredible amount of writing from lots of different people. You can actually tell from the tone of the writing in a piece of work exactly what is going through the mind of the writer. This is particularly important if you are going through a difficult time in work- for example, redundancies are being spoken about in your workplace, so you feel threatened and vulnerable
Difficult events and circumstances in your life evoke powerful, sometimes very negative feelings and emotions in you. These can find their ay into your subconscious mind very quickly and will show up as clear as day in the writing that you produce. Once you understand that this can and does happen, you are now in the position to do something positive about it
Being aware of your emotions can really help you to project a more positive view to the reader. For example, if you have a sales letter or a CV to write, one of the best things that you can do is to identify when you are at your best. I write best last thing at night, for other people, first thing in the morning is when they are at their most alert and positive
Feeling great about yourself is bond to come over in your writing. When you feel the most positive, drop everything (if that is possible for you) and get down to writing that important sales letter, job application, resume, etc. Be aware of your feelings and moods and monitor your writing for positivity. Get someone else to read through your work and make sure that you are projecting the message that you are trying to achieve
Writing when you are tired is definitely not to recommended. Whilst this may sound like stating the obvious, you would be amazed at the times when we have reviewed CVs that have clearly been written when the writer was feeling tired. This can certainly be the case when a CV is produced by one of the word processing CV factories that mass produce CVs that all look and feel the same
Put something of you into every piece of writing that you attempt. I’m not saying that you need blood dripping out from you forehead as evidence of your intensity but put something real into your writing. Great writers are not scared of inducing powerful emotions in the reader. Whether that is love, passion, belief or any other emotion, make sure that the reader is moved in some way- even if it is anger
Incredible results come from taking a few risks. Make the effort to really connect with your reader and you will stand out from the crowd. this is particularly important in a document like a CV which is a selling document. It is designed to sell you to an employer,so connecting is vital. In fact it is often the difference between getting an interview or a rejection letter
